Take Photo with Train Passenger
Inkjet on fine art photo paper, 2007

Railway is one of the major transportation in Hon Kong. It's the fastest public transportation to go from a spot to somewhere else. In a train, like the term "passenger", we just pass through the interior space and each other. People are all having different routes and destinations, so we will meet each other in short. One may take thirty minutes ride while another may take five minutes only.
Being one of the passengers, I found that although we get "closer" in the train, we tend to avoid any conversation, or even eye contact with each other. By reading newspaper, playing mobile device, listening to the music, etc., we are all trying to close ourselves in a sub-public space.
I set the camera in the middle of the train, and try to ask some passengers to take a photo with me. Some say yes but most of them rejected me. Before taking the photo, I asked if I can put my arm above their shoulder, and pass the shutter release to them. By letting them control the decisive moment, they would feel more relax and show more confident in the photo.
The photo taken is an evidence for our short relationship. I send them back the photo to remain them our relationship and see if this short relationship could be longer.
